Voice Parts
What's the difference in male and female voices? In a 4-part choir, the men are divided into two sections: bass and tenor. The ladies voices are also divided into two sections: alto and soprano. From lowest to highest the four part choir would be bass, tenor, alto soprano. In larger compositions, each section can be divided again into Soprano I and Soprano II, and each section following suit. In solo singing, each voice part can be divided up even further which determines specific opera roles that the vocalist can perform. In men's voices, bass is the lowest, then bass-baritone, baritone, tenor, and counter-tenor. In the ladies' voices, contralto, mezzo soprano, and soprano. For more information and some famous voices in each part, click on the voice part below.
